A deodorant without an antiperspirant active can help manage odour, but it does not reduce perspiration in the same way. Current evidence does not support a link between aluminum-containing antiperspirants and breast cancer; the U.S. National Cancer Institute states that no scientific evidence links underarm antiperspirant or deodorant use to the development of breast cancer. Research has also not confirmed aluminum from everyday sources such as antiperspirants as a cause of Alzheimer’s disease. The practical consideration is skin tolerance: apply to clean, dry, intact skin, and give freshly shaved or irritated underarms time to settle if they feel sensitive.
